During the 2008 Australian Olympic trials, Katie Hoff’s record was beaten by Rice in her 400-metre individual medley event when she completed it within a time frame of 4:31.46 seconds (Shattering for instance). She, however, had already lost to Hoff in the US, but this did not stop her from winning back her pride by beating that same opponent once more, which helped her manage another WR time, which is what we know today as 200 Medley time; 2 minutes & 08 seconds being it.”

Rice later performed at the Beijing Olympic Games held in 2008. She managed to win 3 golds, with each taking world record times, in the 200m and 400m individual medley races as well as the 4X200m freestyle relay race. In a time of 4:29.45 seconds, the 4oom individual medley event led to her getting the first golden medal for Australia during that competition thus becoming the first woman to ever break the 4:30 barrier while participating in an individual medley. Her second gold acquisition came when she won in 2:08, breaking the world record this year in the 200m individual medley.

Rice set a personal best of 2:07:03 in the 200-metre individual medley at the 2009 World Aquatic Championships in Rome and achieved her personal best of 4:29:45 in the 400-metre individual medley during her gold-winning performance at the 2008 Olympics.

This Is Why She Left Her Career

Rice recently appeared on Channel 7’s SAS Australia and faced a challenging moment when she suffered a dislocated shoulder, which nearly led to her withdrawal from the show.

After receiving medical clearance to continue, she had a candid conversation with SAS instructor Ant Middleton. During this discussion, she opened up about the difficulties she faced after retiring from swimming in 2014.

“I really struggled, she admitted.I felt really lost after I finished swimming. I didn’t feel like I had any purpose or direction, and I didn’t feel like anybody understood.”

She went on to explain,I felt like I haven’t really trained for anything since I finished competing – like I haven’t really had a goal to work towards, one specific thing. Having an athletic goal is something I know how to do. I know how to prep for that. I know how to train and push myself, and I’ve always loved that feeling. I don’t know if I’ll ever find something that was the same as what swimming was.”

Rice opened up about the struggles she faced during the final years of her swimming career and how she wanted her final Olympics to be over before they even began.

“Eight months out from the London Olympics, I tore the tendons in my shoulder, she revealed.I remember sitting down with a physio, and he said that I would need surgery to recover it. My goal was to compete at the London Olympics, whether I had a torn tendon in my shoulder or not. I was not going to miss that opportunity. I trained through pain every single day.”

Reflecting on the London Olympics, Rice admitted,When I think about failure, I think about the London Olympics. Everything went wrong. I got injured, I got sick. I needed a break to step away from swimming. Things didn’t align the way I knew they could have.”

She continued,I just remember really longing for it to be over. And that was the day of the opening ceremony, just wanted it to be done. I couldn’t wait for it to be over so I could actually take a break. And this led her to quit her career and start a new life.
